Jim Roberts' Western Auto in Mount Joy has been open to the public since 1974. Jim and Sharon Roberts decided to go into business after their daughter Michele was born. Jim had managed Woolworth stores for eight and a half years and moved nine times, they wanted to put down roots and move back to Lancaster County.

The doors opened for business at 18 W. Main Street, next door to their present store, with a small 1,600 square foot sales floor and a one-bay garage in the back to install the tires and batteries they sold. The business presently occupies about 12,000 square feet of space in the former Murphy Five and Ten building, where the auto store moved in November 1982. The shop includes a modern four bay tire and service center in which thousands of tires and batteries are installed each year and where a wide range of services, including state inspection, alignment and suspension work, exhaust, starting and charging service, and oil change/lube, are offered.

Over the years the local Western Auto store has changed from a general store type of business to an automotive supermarket style of operation. As the store changed, business continued to grow, and the store is now among the top Western Auto stores in the country. According to Jim and Sharon, their store is one of the largest sellers of tires, auto parts and batteries in the Western Auto system. Several thousand different auto parts are in stock, along with over 1,400 tires. If parts are not in stock, thousands of additional parts are available quickly, many times the same day.

Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.daily, including Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday: the store is closed on Sunday.

According to the owners, value and service are important ideals at Jim Roberts' Western Auto, where the staff works hard to be competitively priced and maintain a high level of service, whether it is in completing a job on time as promised or going the extra mile to locate that hard-to-find part or accessory quickly and at the right price.

The staff of Jim Roberts' Western Auto has grown from the two owners to 18 employees which include their daughter Michele. Eric Ross is the service manager; Eric was Roberts' first full-time employee, after starting as a part-timer while he was still in school.

Jim and Sharon serve the community in many ways by their involvement in civic clubs and projects.

Now in business 28 years, Jim and Sharon would like to thank our customers for their business. We know you have a choice on where to purchase the goods and services that we offer and we continue to strive to make it pleasant and convenient to choose us. Thank You!
