The doors
opened for business at 18 W. Main Street, next door to their present
store, with a small 1,600 square foot sales floor and a one-bay
garage in the back to install the tires and batteries they sold.
The business presently occupies about 12,000 square feet of space
in the former Murphy Five and Ten building, where the auto store
moved in November 1982. The shop includes a modern four bay tire
and service center in which thousands of tires and batteries are
installed each year and where a wide range of services, including
state inspection, alignment and suspension work, exhaust, starting
and charging service, and oil change/lube, are offered.
Over the years
the local Western Auto store has changed from a general store
type of business to an automotive supermarket style of operation.
As the store changed, business continued to grow, and the store
is now among the top Western Auto stores in the country. According
to Jim and Sharon, their store is one of the largest sellers of
tires, auto parts and batteries in the Western Auto system. Several
thousand different auto parts are in stock, along with over 1,400
tires. If parts are not in stock, thousands of additional parts
are available quickly, many times the same day.
